In the last ten years, the interest in establishing a new scientific interdisciplinary subject of visual culture/visual studies has gone beyond the boundaries of the subject of contemporary visual arts. The visual, pictorial and cultural turn signifies the liberation of the image from the ruling paradigms of language and iconological interpretations in the history of art. With its contributions from philosophers, art historians, culturologists, semioticians and mediologists, this collection is directed towards an attempt at theoretical cooperation of related disciplines in the search for a new status of the image today in the digital age.
